THE HUMAN-MACHINE RELATIONSHIP, AND HOW IT MAY DEVELOP

Introduction

The tremendous advancement of computational intelligence throughout recent years is something that couldn't ever have been anticipated or considered. We have just barely begun to perceive how intelligent machines are starting to impact the relationship between humans and machines. If we were to take a gander at smart speakers, for instance, we have perceived how they have developed from taking in basic voice commands to supporting an environment of uses and collaborations inside a home. Technological innovation is advancing, and it is making its shift from being a moronic instrument utilized by a human user to potentially turning into an associate or colleague. The relationship between humans and machines has forever been outlined as a user and tool, or master and slave relationship. Are we starting to see that form of the relationship changing? The development of more intelligent machines simply makes more valuable machines. Be that as it may, the consistent improvement in intellectual AI is attracting the future to comprise a more level field among humans and machines. Many organizations will move to put an intelligent machine as your colleague in the workplace, or conceivably even your superior. Be that as it may, as insightful as machines can get and as improvement pushes to make a more level field among machines and people in a work field, the relationship will continue as before as being one between a user and a tool. However, the future could involve advancement in that relationship, where intelligent machines would, in any case, be named an instrument. The human need for these 'devices' will happen to be more significant and people will become intensely dependent on intelligent machines.

Intelligent agents as a colleague or teammate

Current accelerated AI development sees real-time AI assistance, data-driven assistance, and much of the transactional activity in a workplace conducted by intelligent agents. On the other hand, human-oriented aspects such as empathy, intuition, creativity, and problem-solving skills are not yet in Artificial intelligence’s reach, it will be enterprises whose people best adapt to working with intelligent machines to seek aid from them.

If we were to look at the purpose of designing or developing an intelligent machine, it is to have it achieve or aid in achieving a singular task or a set of tasks. Whether it is within a team of human agents, other intelligent agents, or on its own. When it comes to aiding in achieving a task, it would sometimes involve humans and machines working together. Members of a team have an assigned job or task that they are in charge of but may also be cross-trained so that a teammate may be able to pick up on a task of another member in a case where a member might be overloaded with work or unable to finish their work. This case of task function allocation is optimized based on a human’s capability to take on a certain task. This will also need to be implemented in a team filled with human and intelligent agents, which will spark a change in process design as we move from machines working in information systems, now going into automation. To create a level field that allows an autonomous agent to bethought of and relied on the same as any other human teammate, it would need to be cross-trained to handle different tasks. It would need to house that ability of fluid functional location and work towards different goals that a human team member would be able to adjust to and apply. This is of course quite a far developmental stage that current intelligent agents are quite far from, which limits an intelligent agent.

If we were to look at the core of a successful progressive team, we will find communication as key. Communication ensures that all members of the team house the same understanding of the goals and current workflow of the team. In a team where there is an intelligent agent member, the human team members must have a significant understanding of the intelligent agent team member’s decision-making process [2]. The way that their autonomous teammate functions need to be clear to all human members of the team as an approach to maintaining a good understanding and communication.

Another key of importance to healthy teamwork would be a well-developed trust between team members. Team members must trust one another to make healthy key decisions. Trust develops throughout training and working together over and over, as it allows team members to begin to predict each other’s actions. Trust has always been deemed subjective; however, ongoing research is providing results that show thathumans are developing trust in autonomous agents who display outcomes and an ability to make strong decisions [3]. Some are currently utilizing methods to correlate trust with physiological responses by linking human arousal with autonomous agent behavior in proximity to humans [3]. This means that the human perspective of Artificial Intelligence is advancing, beginning to see artificial intelligence as reliable and it could lead to a change in the dynamic of the human-machine relationship. Another critical concern to note would be that if we were to deploy an autonomous agent into a team of human agents, we must expect for it to be able to deal with unforeseen conditions, in other words, the ability to adapt to an unexpected circumstance. This is to imply that an intelligent agent must be able to learn by necessity, which constructs a significant challenge of assuring appropriate actions within the boundaries of allowed authority.

Evolving AI’s effect on its relationship with humans

Intelligent machines can complete redundant tasks that used to be done by human labor in a more efficient method. Tasks as such can be reading a contract, finding key numbers from a CSV file, and putting them into an excel file, and so on [4]. However, the higher-level labor that requires a more complicated skill set such as planning, judgment, and reasoning is still far from the reach of today’s artificial intelligence. Humanintelligence is still superior to Artificial intelligence. Artificial Intelligence has been shown to perform exceptionally well within a well-defined margin. Deloitte’s second edition of the ‘State of AI in the enterprise’ report found that 42% of executives believe that Artificial Intelligence will be of critical importance within two years (as in by 2020) (Wang, 2019) [5]. By ‘critical importance’ it was aimed at having to do with optimizing work processes, increasing returns on investment, and supporting better strategy, not replacing human employees. We will merely become more dependent on Intelligent Machines, their use will expand to different fields to complete different tasks, however, it will just be used as just an intelligent tool to achieve the task that it was programmed or designed to achieve. It will be appointed to that certain task for it is more suitable than a human employee. However, the relationship between humans and machines will not change, it will remain a relationship between a user (humans) and a tool (machines), no matter what level of intelligence it could reach. As the tasks carried out by both entities may have changed, but the dynamic of the relationship stays the same, where the intelligent machine is working for the benefit of its human user.

The combination of Human and Machine Intelligence

By using machine learning algorithms to detect key patterns and relationships from billions of data sources, Artificial Intelligence can derive deep and actionable insights to aid in the industries’ decision-making processes. It is not a novel idea to use a wide variety of data sources to predict and analyze consumer behavior. However, Artificial Intelligence can do it by processing data with significant speed and accuracy. Big data technologies integrated with machine learning algorithms provide very intriguing and useful insights. Moreover, the process of insight generation is not driven by user queries, but by a mechanism that continuously monitors it and is proactive and real-time based. These types of intelligent machines that can provide cognitive insights can be seen as senior consultants, but they will not be replacing human employees since their tasks are far beyond human capabilities. They are merely tools used to achieve what’s not possible for a human to achieve on its own. We are seeing how machines can aid in making key decisions, how they can carry out tasks much faster than human capabilities. This is all to show how intelligent machines can be a tool to provide significant aid to us. That type of relationship where human intelligence and intelligent machines’ capabilities combine to achieve goals with significant results will only develop and grow in the future. We will require intelligent machines’ speed and accuracy to achieve what was thought unachievable, as much as intelligent machines will require the human’s capability of reasoning and logic. Does this mean that intelligent machines would still just be regarded as tools? Yes, as in the end they are just doing what they were designed and programmed to do. They are designed and programmed to fulfill or aid in a task that was assigned to it by a human user, that the human user would benefit from. What recent innovation in the field of artificial intelligence has changed in the relationship between humans and machines, would be the way humans use and communicate with machines. At the early stages of the development of intelligent machines, the new machines that were introduced were that to suit the purpose of replacing low-class labor or carrying out tasks that humans were not able to do. However, with Modern-day innovation in Artificial Intelligence, we are starting to see intelligent machines being utilized in various areas of our daily lives. We now use a smart speaker to make our shopping list for us, we use our mobile phones for navigation to find the shortest route to work, we come across chatbots when we contact customer service, and so on. In an essence, intelligent machines have become a significant aid for us when we carry out some of oursimple day-to-day tasks, we have become more dependent on them as a tool to simplify many of our daily tasks.

Conclusion

Analyzing how intelligent agents would be able to work within a team to achieve a task, seeing how its combination with human intelligence to achieve a common goal, and how the development of AI could affect the relationship that humans have with machines, we can see how intelligent machines are becoming of more significance in today’s world. That has affected the way we view them and the trust we have in them. The relationship that we have with intelligent machines has in some sense changed over recent years. Intelligent machines have gained a higher trust from humans which means that humans don’t view it as just a simple tool to aid them. Intelligent machines could eventually be more than just a tool, they may become a necessity. That is due to their use to achieve tasks out of reach from a human’s capabilities. However, intelligent machines would remain limited as there are human traits that they are unable to possess. That draws the image of the relationship more clearly, the human-machine relationship is still and will always remain the type of relationship between a user and a tool respectively, just with a different dynamic. Intelligent machines will become more autonomous, they might not require a human controller or a human to evaluate its outcomes due to the increased trust laid into them. The relationship progresses to see intelligent machines carrying a heavier weight in achieving tasks, to remove that weight of a human user. The way we view intelligent machines might change, but the dynamic of the relationship will remain the same.
